Staten Island

Staten IslandOriginally was called Staten Eylandt by the Dutch after the Dutch governing body, The Dutch found themselves having to buy this sixty square mile island a total of five time first settled the island in 1661 along with a group of Huguenots. The Dutch named the settlement Oude Dorp, later renamed to Old Town. Staten Island has always felt like an unwanted stepchild to the city of New York. As far back as the late 1600's much effort was made by the East Jersey officials to make it part of that colony.

The Dutch surrendered Staten Island to the English in 1664, who in turn made the final purchase of the Island in 1670 from the Indians. Located at the entrance of New York Harbor, Staten Island has always endured a strategic military history. The British used the island during the beginning of the American Revolution as a staging area for their troops.

Staten Island has been cited as a most exciting source of historical information in that the borough contains more historical structures dating back to the seventeenth century than does any other in the city.
