Did you know...
The city got its first
hospital in 1659 when the new director general of New Netherlands, Peter Stuyvesant
established it over the strong opposition of his employer, the Dutch West India Company.
The decision was both a financial and practical one for Stuyvesant in that the legendary
unsanitary conditions then prevailing in New Amsterdam made it impossible for injured and
ill slaves and soldiers to recover within a reasonable amount of time. He established the
first hospital under the direction of Hilletje Wilbruch on Bridge Street.
